Ballymoon Castle
📍 County Carlow, Ireland
About
Ballymoon Castle is a National Monument situated 2 miles (3 km) east of Bagenalstown, County Carlow, Ireland. The castle is thought to date from the 13th century.
Built around 1290, possibly by the Bigod or Carew families, Ballymoon Castle is one of the largest and most enigmatic Norman castles in Ireland. The massive rectangular enclosure with projecting towers has no keep—an unusual plan suggesting it was never completed. It was briefly held by the Kavanaghs and ruinous by the 16th century.
