Builth Castle
📍 Powys, Wales
About
Builth Castle was a castle built under King Edward I, just outside Builth Wells, Powys, Wales. At one time it was an impressive stone-built castle but all the masonry has been removed over the years and all that remains are the mound on which it stood, the ditches and embankments.
Built by the Normans in the late 11th century, Builth Castle was repeatedly attacked and rebuilt during the Welsh wars. Edward I strengthened it in stone from 1277 as part of his campaign to subdue Wales. Near here in December 1282, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, the last Prince of Wales, was killed at the Battle of Orewin Bridge. The castle fell into ruin by the 15th century; only earthworks survive.
