Closeburn Castle
📍 Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland
About
Closeburn Castle is a privately owned tower house, probably of the 14th century, but possibly older, and is one of the oldest continually inhabited houses in Scotland. The castle is located 1 km east of the village of Closeburn, in the historical county of Dumfriesshire, 2 km south-east of Thornhill, in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.
The tower dates from around 1350 and has been continuously inhabited since. The Kirkpatrick family, whose ancestor Roger de Kirkpatrick reputedly finished off the Red Comyn after Robert the Bruce's attack, held the castle for five centuries. One of the earliest stone tower houses in Scotland. Massive walls and a well-preserved interior. Private but visible from the road near Thornhill.
