About

Coverham Abbey, North Yorkshire, England, was a Premonstratensian monastery that was founded at Swainby in 1190 by Helewisia, daughter of the Chief Justiciar Ranulf de Glanville. It was refounded at Coverham in about 1212 by her son Ranulf fitzRalph, who had the body of his late mother reinterred in the chapter house at Coverham.

Founded c.1202 for Premonstratensian canons, who moved here from a previous site at Swainby. The abbey never became wealthy and its community was always small. After dissolution in 1536, parts were incorporated into a private house. Fragments of the church and cloister survive alongside the later building. The site is on private land with limited access.
