Dinas Emrys
📍 Gwynedd, Wales
About
Dinas Emrys is a rocky and wooded hillock near Beddgelert in Gwynedd, north-west Wales. Rising some 76 m (250 ft) above the floor of the Glaslyn river valley, it overlooks the southern end of Llyn Dinas in Snowdonia.
An Iron Age and Dark Age hillfort near Beddgelert in Snowdonia. According to Nennius (c.829 AD), King Vortigern tried to build a fortress here but the walls kept collapsing. The boy Myrddin Emrys (Merlin) revealed two dragons—red and white—fighting beneath a hidden pool, symbolising the Welsh and Saxon nations. Excavations in the 1950s found a pool and Dark Age structures. Now owned by the National Trust.
