Drochil Castle
📍 Scottish Borders, Scotland
About
Drochil Castle is a ruined castle in the Scottish Borders. It is located above the Lyne Water, 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) north-west of Peebles, and 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) south of West Linton.
Begun around 1578 by Regent Morton (James Douglas, 4th Earl of Morton), intended as a grand Renaissance residence. Morton was executed in 1581 before it was completed. The Z-plan castle is remarkably large — more mansion than fortress — with traces of plaster and decorative work. One of the earliest attempts at a Scottish country house. Now a roofless but impressive shell on private land.
