The longest recorded history of any stronghold in Scotland. Sits on a volcanic plug of basalt known as Dumbarton Rock on the River Clyde. Occupied since the Iron Age, it was the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Strathclyde (Alt Clut). Mary Queen of Scots embarked from here for France as a child.
