Dunbar Castle

📍 East Lothian, Scotland

About

Dunbar Castle was one of the strongest fortresses in Scotland, situated in a prominent position overlooking the harbour of the town of Dunbar, in East Lothian. Several fortifications were built successively on the site, near the English-Scottish border. The last was slighted in 1567; it is a ruin today.

A royal stronghold from at least the 11th century. 'Black Agnes', Countess of Dunbar, famously defended it against an English siege in 1338. Mary Queen of Scots fled here with Bothwell in 1567 after the murder of Rizzio. Demolished by Parliament in 1568 to prevent further use. The ruins were later incorporated into the harbour — cannon loops peer out between fishing boats.
