📍 Argyll and Bute, Scotland
About
Duntrune Castle is located on the north side of Loch Crinan and across from the village of Crinan in Argyll and Bute, west of Scotland. It is thought to be the oldest continuously occupied castle on mainland Scotland. It was the seat of the Campbells of Duntroon until 1792. The castle is a category B listed building.
Dating from the 12th or 13th century, claimed to be the oldest continuously inhabited castle on the Scottish mainland. Originally a MacDougall fortress, it passed to the Campbells in the 13th century. Legend tells of a MacDonald piper who was imprisoned here and had his hands cut off for playing a warning to approaching clansmen. A fingerless skeleton was found beneath the floor in the 20th century. Private but visible from the road.
