About

Dunyvaig Castle is located on the south side of Islay, in Argyll, Scotland, on the shore of Lagavulin Bay, 4 kilometres from Port Ellen. The castle was once a naval base of the Lord of the Isles, chiefs of Clan Donald. It was held by the chiefs of the Clan MacDonald of Dunnyveg.

A key naval fortress of the MacDonald Lords of the Isles from the 13th century, controlling the sea approaches to Islay. Besieged repeatedly during the 16th-17th century struggles between the MacDonalds and the Campbells. Fell to a Crown expedition in 1615 after the MacDonalds' final rebellion. Archaeological excavations have revealed rich material culture including Continental trade goods.
