Egglestone Abbey
📍 County Durham, England
About
Egglestone Abbey is a ruined Premonstratensian abbey in County Durham, England. It is 1+1⁄2 miles (2.4 km) southeast of Barnard Castle, on the south bank of the River Tees, and was historically within the North Riding of Yorkshire.
Founded c.1195 for Premonstratensian canons. The abbey was always poor, struggling with debt and damage from Scottish raids. Despite its difficulties, it survived until the Dissolution in 1540. The substantial ruins include much of the church and domestic buildings, set in a spectacular position above the Tees gorge. Managed by English Heritage.
