Enniscorthy Castle
📍 County Wexford, Ireland
About
Enniscorthy Castle is situated in Enniscorthy, County Wexford, Ireland. Construction on the castle commenced in the late 1190s and was first occupied by its Norman owners in 1203 A.D. on the site of a previous wooden castle they had erected some years earlier. It was built by Philip De Prendergast.
Originally built by Raymond le Gros in the 1190s, Enniscorthy Castle was granted to the Prendergast family before passing to the MacMurrough Kavanaghs. Rebuilt in the 16th century by Sir Henry Wallop, it played roles in the 1641 and 1798 rebellions. Extensively restored in 2011, it now houses the Enniscorthy Castle Museum exploring 1798, the Great Famine, and Easter 1916.
