Finchale Priory
📍 County Durham, England
About
Finchale Priory, sometimes referred to as Finchale Abbey, was a 13th-century Benedictine priory. The remains are sited by the River Wear, four miles from Durham, England. It is a Grade I listed building.
St Godric, a former merchant and sailor who became a hermit, settled here c.1110 and lived in austerity until his death in 1170. Durham Cathedral Priory founded a dependent priory on the site. By the later medieval period it served as a holiday retreat for Durham's monks, who came in groups for rest and recreation. Substantial ruins survive in a lovely riverside setting. Managed by English Heritage.
