Finlarig Castle
📍 Perthshire, Scotland
About
Finlarig Castle is an early 17th-century castle standing on a mound on a peninsula between the River Lochay and Loch Tay, just over 1⁄2 mile (0.80 km) north of Killin in Stirling, Scotland.
Built around 1629 by Sir Duncan Campbell of Glenorchy ('Black Duncan'), who founded the vast Breadalbane estate. The castle features a notorious beheading pit — nobles were decapitated here, while commoners were hanged from a nearby tree. The ruins stand near the western end of Loch Tay at Killin. A chilling reminder of the absolute power wielded by Highland chiefs.
