📍 Hertfordshire, England
About
Hertford Castle is a Norman era castle built beside the River Lea in Hertford, the county town of Hertfordshire, England. Most of the internal buildings of the structure have been demolished.
Built soon after the Norman Conquest in 1067. The castle played a role in various medieval conflicts and royal events. The gatehouse, built in the 15th century, is the principal surviving structure. The infant King Henry VI held a parliament here in 1427. Elizabeth I spent much of her childhood at the nearby Old Palace. The castle and grounds are now managed by Hertford Town Council as a civic and events space.
