Built by the MacDonells of Glengarry after Mackenzie raids in 1602. According to clan tradition, stones were passed hand-to-hand by a chain of clansmen from Ben Tee. Burned by Cromwell's troops in 1654, held for James VII in 1688, burned again after the 1715 and 1745 Jacobite risings by government forces.
