The Round Tower at Kells, County Meath, is part of a monastic complex that housed the Book of Kells (now in Trinity College Dublin) for centuries after the monks fled Viking raids on Iona in the 9th century. The site also preserves several fine high crosses, including the remarkable South Cross with its biblical scenes. The tower and crosses together form one of Ireland's most important early Christian sites.
