Kilwinning Abbey
📍 North Ayrshire, Scotland
About
Kilwinning Abbey is a ruined abbey located in the centre of the town of Kilwinning, North Ayrshire, Scotland.
Founded around 1162 by Tironensian monks, possibly by Hugh de Morville. The abbey was a major religious house in medieval Ayrshire. Legend connects it with the origins of Scottish Freemasonry — Lodge Mother Kilwinning No. 0 claims to be the oldest Masonic lodge in the world. An annual papingo (parrot) shooting contest has been held from the abbey tower since medieval times. Substantial ruins survive.
