"Henry VIII loved Leeds Castle so much he spent a fortune converting it for Catherine of Aragon. She visited exactly once. The swans on the moat, some say, are descendants of the ones she fed that afternoon."

About

Leeds Castle floats. There is no other word for it. Built on two islands in a lake formed by the River Len, it seems to hover above its own reflection, more fairy tale than fortress, especially in the morning mist that gathers over the Kentish Weald. Lord Conway called it "the loveliest castle in the world" in 1926, and no one has seriously argued since.

It has been a Norman stronghold, a royal palace for six medieval queens of England, a Jacobean country house, a Tudor playground for Henry VIII, and — in the 20th century — the private retreat of the Anglo-American heiress Lady Baillie, who restored it with jazz-age glamour and hosted weekend parties for everyone from Errol Flynn to the future Edward VIII. The castle's medieval bones — the Gloriette, the barbican, the gatehouse — are softened by Lady Baillie's interiors: art deco bathrooms, Thorvaldsen sculptures, and a bedroom suite fit for a very stylish ghost.

Today the 500-acre estate includes a yew maze, a grotto, an aviary of rare birds, and gardens that blaze with colour in every season. Black swans glide across the moat. The Dog Collar Museum — yes, really — displays five centuries of canine accessories in the gatehouse. But the best moment is the first one: crossing the bridge and seeing the castle rise from the water, golden in the late Kent light, looking exactly like it has for nine hundred years.
