📍 Oxfordshire, England
About
Mapledurham House is an Elizabethan stately home located in the civil parish of Mapledurham in the English county of Oxfordshire. It is a Grade I listed building, first listed on 24 October 1951.
Begun in 1585 by Sir Richard Blount, one of the largest Elizabethan houses in Oxfordshire. The Blount family, devout Catholics, maintained a private chapel throughout the penal era. The adjacent watermill is the last working watermill on the Thames. Alexander Pope was a frequent visitor and wrote some of his poetry here. The Elizabethan exterior conceals largely Georgian and Victorian interiors. Grade I listed.
