About

Mathrafal near Welshpool, in Powys, Mid Wales, was the seat of the Kings and Princes of Powys probably from the 9th century until its destruction in 1213 by Prince Llywelyn the Great.

Mathrafal was the llys (royal court) of the princes of Powys from at least the 9th century, making it one of the most significant sites in medieval Welsh history. The earthwork remains include a large motte and ditches. The princes ruled from here until the 13th century. Edward I seized the site in 1277. Now marked only by grassy mounds in fields near Meifod, Powys, it is easily overlooked despite its historical importance.
