Melgund Castle
📍 Angus, Scotland
About
Melgund Castle, lying around two kilometres (1.2 mi) due east of Aberlemno in Angus, Scotland, is a 16th-century L-plan castle which has been partially restored as a private residence. It was designated as a scheduled monument in 1971.
Built around 1543 by Cardinal David Beaton, Archbishop of St Andrews and effective ruler of Scotland, who was assassinated in 1546. A large L-plan tower house that was never completed due to the Cardinal's murder. The substantial ruins show what would have been a grand residence. Passed to the Gordon and then Elliot families. Freely accessible in farmland near Aberlemno.
