Pendragon Castle
📍 Cumbria, England
About
Pendragon Castle is a ruin located in Mallerstang Dale, Cumbria, south of Kirkby Stephen, and close to the hamlet of Outhgill. It stands above a bend in the River Eden, overlooked by Wild Boar Fell to the south-west and Mallerstang Edge to the east. It is a Grade I listed building.
According to legend, built by Uther Pendragon, father of King Arthur, who unsuccessfully tried to divert the River Eden for its moat. In reality, likely built in the 12th century by Ranulph de Meschines. Stands in remote Mallerstang Dale near Kirkby Stephen, overlooked by Wild Boar Fell. Grade I listed. Restored by Lady Anne Clifford in the 17th century before falling into ruin again.
