📍 Cumbria, England
About
Residence of the Bishops of Carlisle from 1230 to 2009. Originally built around four sides of a courtyard. Bishop Strickland's Tower and much of the castle were burnt by Parliamentary troops in 1648 during the Civil War. Restored in the 1760s and again in the 19th century. Sold by the Church Commissioners in 2016 to the Rose Castle Foundation, which now operates it as a peace and reconciliation centre.
