About

Stogursey Castle is a medieval castle in Somerset, England. Most of the site is in ruins, but there is a thatched gatehouse used for holiday rental by the Landmark Trust.

Built by the de Courcy family in the late 11th or early 12th century as part of Somerset's coastal defences. The motte-and-bailey castle had a 60-metre-wide motte. It became a Lancastrian power base during the Wars of the Roses, was besieged and burnt in 1457, then partially rebuilt as an administrative centre for the Percy and Egmont estates. A cottage within the ruins is available through the Landmark Trust.
