Thetford Priory
📍 Norfolk, England
About
Thetford Priory is a Cluniac monastic house in Thetford, Norfolk, England. Founded in 1103 by Roger Bigod of Norfolk, Thetford was one of the most important monasteries of East Anglia.
Founded in the early 12th century as a Cluniac priory, it became the burial place of the Earls and Dukes of Norfolk. When threatened with dissolution in 1536, the 3rd Duke of Norfolk petitioned Henry VIII to save it—unsuccessfully. It was among the last monasteries suppressed. The impressive 14th-century gatehouse and extensive church foundations survive. Managed by English Heritage.
