About
Tintern Abbey is a ruined medieval abbey adjacent to the village of Tintern in Monmouthshire, on the Welsh bank of the River Wye, which at this location forms the border between Monmouthshire in Wales and Gloucestershire in England. Founded on 9 May 1131 by Walter de Clare, Lord of Chepstow, it was the first Cistercian foundation in Wales, and the second in Britain.

GWR from Bristol/Newport. Tintern is 6 miles north — limited bus service or taxi.

Cadw car park at the abbey. Also parking in the village.

On the A466 in the Wye Valley. Scenic drive from Chepstow or Monmouth.

The abbey is on flat ground in the Wye Valley and is one of the most accessible large ruins. Paths around and within the ruins are generally good. The famous west window and nave are spectacular. Immortalised by Wordsworth and Turner. Cadw managed.
