About

Tiverton Castle is the remains of a medieval castle dismantled after the English Civil War and thereafter converted in the 17th century into a country house. It occupies a defensive position above the banks of the River Exe at Tiverton in Devon.

A Norman motte was built in 1106 on a defensive position above the River Exe. Expanded with towers and walls over centuries by the Courtenay Earls of Devon. During the Civil War it was a Royalist stronghold besieged by Fairfax's Parliamentarian troops. Dismantled after the war and partially converted into a 17th-century country house. Still privately inhabited with guided tours.
