About

Tretower Court is a medieval fortified manor house in Wales, situated in the village of Tretower, near Crickhowell in modern-day Powys, previously within the historical county of Breconshire or Brecknockshire.

The castle was begun c. 1100 by the Picard family, Norman adventurers who gradually became powerful Welsh lords. Roger Picard II built the distinctive circular tower that gave the place its Welsh name 'Tre-tŵr' (place of the tower). The adjacent court was the creation of Sir Roger Vaughan during the Wars of the Roses, when he became one of the most powerful men in Wales. Managed by Cadw.
