Founded in 1128 by William Gifford, Bishop of Winchester, with 12 monks and an abbot from Aumone in France. As the first Cistercian house in Britain, Waverley became the mother house for many subsequent foundations. The abbey suffered repeated flooding from the River Wey. Dissolved in 1536.
