About
Amberley Castle stands in the village of Amberley, West Sussex.
The site was endowed to the See of Selsey by King Caedwalla of Wessex in AD 683. Bishop Ralph de Luffa built a timber lodge here in 1103, replaced by stone in 1140. Known as the Bishop of Chichester's Summer Palace from 1305. Fortified in 1377 during the Hundred Years War with high curtain walls and corner towers. Now a Grade I listed luxury hotel.
