Ardtornish Castle
📍 Highland, Scotland
About
Ardtornish Castle is a castle situated in the grounds of the Ardtornish estate in Morvern, on the west coast of Scotland. It stands at the seaward end of a promontory which extends in a southerly direction into the Sound of Mull, about 1 mile south-east of the village of Lochaline, Highland. It is protected as a scheduled monument.
A 13th-century castle on a promontory overlooking the Sound of Mull. In 1462, the Treaty of Westminster-Ardtornish was secretly signed here between John MacDonald, Lord of the Isles, and Edward IV of England, agreeing to divide Scotland between them. When discovered, the treaty led to the forfeiture of the Lordship. The atmospheric ruins are reached by a walk along the shore from Lochaline.
