Birdoswald Roman Fort was known as Banna in Roman times, reflecting the geography of the site on a triangular spur of land bounded by cliffs to the south and east commanding a broad meander of the River Irthing in Cumbria below.
Known as Banna in Roman times, built c.122 AD as part of Hadrian's Wall defences. Garrisoned by Cohors I Aelia Dacorum from c.126-400 AD. One of 16 forts along the Wall, remarkably occupied into the post-Roman 5th century. Managed by English Heritage since 2004.
