Burgh Castle
📍 Norfolk, England
About
Burgh Castle is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It is 3 miles (4.8 km) south-west of Great Yarmouth and 16 miles (26 km) east of Norwich. It is most notable for the Roman Saxon Shore fort also called Burgh Castle.
Built around the 3rd century AD as one of nine Roman Saxon Shore forts defending the east and south coasts of Britain against Saxon raiders. Known as Gariannonum, it housed a garrison of cavalry. Three imposing walls with projecting bastions for catapults survive to near full height. After the Romans left, a Saxon monastery may have been established within the walls. Now managed by English Heritage with free access.
