Calke Abbey
📍 Derbyshire, England
About
Calke Abbey is a Grade I listed country house near Ticknall, Derbyshire, England, in the care of the charitable National Trust.
Built 1701-1704 for Sir John Harpur on the site of an Augustinian priory. Never actually an abbey. The Harpur-Crewe family lived here for nearly 300 years, becoming increasingly reclusive. When the National Trust acquired it in 1985, many rooms hadn't been touched in over a century. Rather than restoring it, the Trust preserved its state of gentle decay — peeling wallpaper, abandoned collections, dusty taxidermy — as a deliberately unstately home.
