Dale Abbey
📍 Derbyshire, England
About
Dale Abbey is a village and civil parish in the borough of Erewash in Derbyshire in the East Midlands of England, 6 miles north east of Derby. The population of the civil parish on the 2011 census was 1,351. Formerly known as Depedale or Deepdale, the village contains the remains of an abbey founded in the 12th or 13th century.
Founded c.1204 for Premonstratensian canons. The abbey was never large or wealthy. After dissolution, most of the buildings were demolished. A single great arch of the church survives in dramatic isolation. The remarkable All Saints Church nearby, sharing a building with a farmhouse, seats only about 26 people and is often cited as the smallest church in England. Scheduled Monument.
