About
The Battle of Culloden took place on 16 April 1746, near Inverness, in the Scottish Highlands. A Jacobite army under Charles Edward Stuart was decisively defeated by a British government force commanded by the Duke of Cumberland, thereby ending the Jacobite rising of 1745.
On 16 April 1746, the last pitched battle fought on British soil took place here. The Jacobite army of Bonnie Prince Charlie was decisively defeated by government forces under the Duke of Cumberland in barely 60 minutes. Around 1,500-2,000 Jacobites were killed. The battle ended the Stuart claim to the throne and led to the destruction of the Highland clan system. The NTS visitor centre opened in 2007 with immersive battlefield experience.
