Deer Abbey was a Cistercian monastery in Buchan, Scotland. It was founded by 1219 under the patronage William Comyn, jure uxoris Earl of Buchan, who is also buried there.
Founded in 1219 by William Comyn, Earl of Buchan, for Cistercian monks. The abbey is associated with the Book of Deer, a 10th-century gospel book with marginal notes in Scots Gaelic — the earliest surviving Gaelic text from Scotland. The ruins include walls of the church, cloister, and domestic buildings. Set in peaceful Buchan countryside near Mintlaw.
