About

Dunure Castle is located on the west coast of Scotland, in South Ayrshire, about five miles south of Ayr and close to the village of Dunure. Today the castle stands in ruins on a rocky promontory on the Carrick coast, overlooking the small harbour of Dunure.

A 13th-century castle perched on a rocky headland above the fishing village of Dunure. Most infamously, in 1570, Gilbert Kennedy, 4th Earl of Cassillis, roasted Allan Stewart, Commendator of Crossraguel Abbey, in the 'black vault' here to force him to sign over abbey lands. The ruins overlook a picturesque harbour with views across to Arran and Ailsa Craig.
