Ely Cathedral
📍 Cambridgeshire, England
About
Ely Cathedral, formally the Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Ely, is an Anglican cathedral in the city of Ely, Cambridgeshire, England.
Founded as a monastery by St Etheldreda in 673 AD. The current Norman cathedral was begun in 1083. Its most extraordinary feature is the unique Octagon, built 1322-1334 after the original Norman tower collapsed, engineered by Alan of Walsingham — a marvel of medieval ingenuity with an 8-post wooden lantern weighing 400 tonnes. The Lady Chapel is the largest in England. Featured in films including The King's Speech.
