The first of Edward I's Welsh castles (1277). Its unique detached great tower is unlike any other castle in Britain. Set on the Dee Estuary with views across to the Wirral. The grounds are partially accessible; the towers have steps. Free entry, open year-round. The scene of Richard II's fateful meeting with Bolingbroke (dramatized by Shakespeare).
