About

The Hafod estate, also known as Hafod Uchtryd, is a wooded and landscaped estate in the Ystwyth valley in Ceredigion, Wales. Near Devil's Bridge, Cwmystwyth and Pont-rhyd-y-groes, it is off the B4574 road. Hafod estate land was within the boundaries of the Cistercian Abbey Strata Florida. Originally a hunting lodge for Welsh Chieftains, it became home to the landed gentry and the nobility. In the late eighteenth century, a celebrated landscape was created under the ownership of Thomas Johnes.

An 18th-century Picturesque landscape created by Thomas Johnes from 1783 in the Ystwyth valley, Ceredigion. Johnes planted millions of trees and created elaborate walks, cascades, and viewpoints inspired by Romantic ideals. The mansion (designed by Thomas Baldwin and later rebuilt after fire) was demolished in 1958. The Forestry Commission has restored many of the walks. The Hafod church by James Wyatt survives.
