Hoghton Tower
📍 Lancashire, England
About
Hoghton Tower is a fortified manor house two-thirds of a mile (1 km) east of the village of Hoghton, Lancashire, England, and stands on a hilltop site on the highest point in the area. It takes its name from the de Hoghton family, its historical owners since at least the 12th century. The present house dates from about 1560–65.
Built c.1560-65 for Thomas de Hoghton, whose family has owned the estate since at least the 12th century. King James I visited in 1617 and allegedly knighted a loin of beef here, creating sirloin. Damaged during the Civil War and fell derelict before being rebuilt 1862-1901. The Great Barn dates to 1692. Now run by the Hoghton Tower Preservation Trust and open to the public.
