About

Lindisfarne Castle is a 16th-century castle located on Holy Island, near Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, England, much altered by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1901. The island is accessible from the mainland at low tide by means of a causeway.

Built around 1550 using stone from the dissolved Lindisfarne Priory to protect the harbour. Saw action during the English Civil War and the 1715 Jacobite rising. Fell into ruin before being purchased by Edward Hudson, founder of Country Life magazine, in 1901. Architect Edwin Lutyens transformed it into an Edwardian country house. Gertrude Jekyll designed the charming walled garden. Given to the National Trust in 1944. Only accessible via a tidal causeway.
