Marmion Tower
📍 North Yorkshire, England
About
Marmion Tower, also known historically as Tanfield Castle, is a 15th-century gatehouse near the village of West Tanfield in North Yorkshire, England. It survived the destruction of the surrounding fortified manor and is now managed by English Heritage.
This 15th-century gatehouse was the entrance to Tanfield Castle, the defended riverside manor of the Marmion and FitzHugh families. Three storeys high, it features a fine oriel window. The manor house it once guarded has vanished, but the tower survives beside the River Ure. The Marmion name later inspired Sir Walter Scott's 1808 poem. Managed by English Heritage, free to visit.
