Sulgrave Manor is a mid-16th century Tudor hall house in Sulgrave, Northamptonshire, UK, built by Lawrence Washington, the 3rd great-grandfather of George Washington, first President of the United States.
Built by Lawrence Washington in the 1540s using stone from the dissolved Canons Ashby Priory. The Washington family lived here until 1610. George Washington was a direct descendant of these Northamptonshire Washingtons. The Washington family coat of arms (stars and stripes) is believed to have inspired the American flag. Purchased in 1914 to celebrate 100 years of peace between Britain and America. Open to visitors.
