About

Torthorwald Castle is a large ruined rectangular tower at the centre of the village of Torthorwald just outside Dumfries in south west Scotland.

Originally a 12th-century motte-and-bailey. The stone castle dates from the 14th century, built by the Kirkpatrick family after Robert the Bruce confiscated the lands in 1306. Passed to the Carlyle family in 1425. Attacked and sacked in 1544. The ruins stand up to 60 feet high.
