Comlongon Castle
📍 Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland
About
Comlongon Castle is a tower house dating from the later 15th century or early 16th century. It is located 1 kilometre (0.6 mi) west of the village of Clarencefield, and 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) south-east of Dumfries, in south west Scotland. The original tower has been extended by the addition of a baronial style mansion, completed around 1900.
Built around 1450 by the Murray family. The tower is one of the largest in southern Scotland, standing 50 feet high with walls up to 14 feet thick. Lady Marion Carruthers allegedly leapt from the castle in 1570 rather than submit to a forced marriage. Her ghost — the Green Lady — is said to haunt the grounds. A Victorian mansion was attached in the 19th century. Now a popular wedding venue and hotel.
