About

Whithorn Priory was a medieval Scottish monastery that also served as a cathedral, located at 6 Bruce Street in Whithorn, Wigtownshire, Dumfries and Galloway.

Tradition holds that St Ninian founded a church here around 397 AD, making Whithorn the earliest Christian settlement in Scotland. The priory was established in the 12th century by Premonstratensian canons. An important medieval pilgrimage destination — even Scottish kings made the journey. Excavations have revealed continuous occupation from the 5th century. The Whithorn Trust museum displays remarkable finds.
