Calder Abbey
📍 Cumbria, England
About
Calder Abbey in Cumbria was a Savigniac monastery founded in 1134 by Ranulph de Gernon, 2nd Earl of Chester, and moved to this site following a refoundation in 1142. It became Cistercian in 1148. It is near the village of Calderbridge.
First founded in 1134 as a daughter house of Furness Abbey, but destroyed by the Scots in 1138. Refounded in 1142. The Cistercian community lived in this remote valley until the Dissolution in 1536. The chapter house doorway is particularly fine. The ruins stand on private land but are visible from nearby paths. Scheduled Monument.
